Extra extra read all about it – new Glasto headliner announced

Earlier this afternoon, Festival Republic boss Melvin Benn announced that the Friday night headline slot would be taken by a British band who hadn’t played at the festival before, and now, festival organisers have just announced that U2′s place will be taken by Gorillaz.

Gorillaz are scheduled to play a number of arena shows over the summer to promote their latest album Plastic Beach, and feature Damon Albarn in their line up who headlined the Pyramid Stage on Sunday night last year with Blur.

The announcement ends the speculation of the last 24 hours over who would replace U2, during which time acts including Led Zeppelin and Coldplay were being rumoured to be in the running for the headline appearance.

One cartoon-loving little boy in the Family Festivals crew today described the announcement as “awesome!”.
